Start and open a document
Create a new canvas from the welcome screen or document browser. Open an existing layered .mpaint document from Finder or Files. Import adds a user-selected image as a layer in the current document.
Save layers or export an image
- Use Save a Copy or Save As to keep layers, editable text and shapes, document units, DPI, and print settings in an
.mpaintdocument. - Use Export when you need a flattened image. Available formats depend on formats supported by the current operating system; PNG, JPEG, and TIFF are the dependable common choices.
Import on iPad
The import menu offers Files, Photo Library, Camera, and Scan Document. Each action starts only when you choose it. If an iCloud file has not downloaded, open it in Files first, wait for the download to finish, and then import it again.
Layers, processing, and printing
Destructive adjustments and effects apply only to the selected, unlocked raster layer and respect the active selection. Add an adjustment layer for a non-destructive result. Print Preview shows page layout before macOS or iPadOS opens its system print flow.
If a large document feels slow
- Let an import or full-resolution effect finish before starting another operation.
- Save the layered document before applying a costly effect.
- Close other memory-heavy apps and retry with fewer simultaneously visible layers.
- When contacting support, include device model, OS version, image dimensions, layer count, and the exact action that was slow or failed. Do not send private artwork unless you choose to.
